Serverless 10th AnniversaryServerless 十周年
2024 marks 10 years of Serverless with AWS Lambda and Amazon ECS as products. Bedrock also celebrates 1 year at our AI/ML Services & Infrastructure Town Hall. As I was looking through old emails, I found a cool coincidence: October 28, 2022, the same date as ECS’s anniversary, was the day I sent my transition email to the team at that time. It felt like a full-circle moment.
Containers & Serverless Journey
Being part of the virtualization and container organization (Developers, Events, Containers and Serverless: DECS) was one of the most rewarding chapters of my time as a builder. My passion for this tech led me to dive deep, spending nearly all my time from 2020 to 2022 on related projects. Beyond the technology itself, I was drawn to the open culture of the community, actively engaging in external activities with The Linux Foundation and Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Revisiting my 2022 recap blog post. I was fortunate to be on the AWS App Runner founding team from its incubation stage as a Fargate engineer, which also led to my promotion to L6. Building a public product from 0 to 1, and working on foundational, bottom-level engineering tasks here was an unforgettable experience.
I owe so much to my leaders and colleagues: my managers, Mats, Anupam, Prashant (now VP at Datadog), Joyita, with whom I later collaborated on another cool database index project in S3, and Jason (my last director manager at AWS App Runner); my skip, Inbal (now CPO of Twilio and formerly CPO of GitHub); and Deepak, our VP back then and currently VP of NGDE (Amazon Q & CodeWhisperer), one of my current team's clients. Deepak’s “Friday Notes” emails continue to be an inspiring read, and I’m so grateful for their guidance and support. A lot has changed since then. AWS App Runner joined AWS Lambda the same month I switched team. Some ECS/Fargate colleagues transitioned to different organizations, such as Annapurna, EKS, over the following years, some stay.
Serverless LLM
Someone says Bedrock is the "Lambda of LLM. " I say it is more than that.. LLM inference is a hot topic, and serverless architecture continues to play a key role in handling the heavy lifting, enabling high performance, high availability, and high efficiency delivery of AI/ML value to customers. This principle has held true since before the 'Attention is All You Need' era.
AWS's VP Swami also noted: "Serverless infrastructure is the backbone of agentic AI systems providing on-demand resources without needing to manage servers.."

2024 年，以 AWS Lambda 和 Amazon ECS 为代表的 Serverless 产品迎来了十周年。在我们的 AI/ML Services & Infrastructure 全员大会上，Bedrock 也庆祝了它的一周年。当我翻看旧邮件时，发现了一个有趣的巧合：2022 年 10 月 28 日，与 ECS 的周年纪念日是同一天，正是我当时向团队发送转岗邮件的日子。仿佛是一个圆满的轮回时刻。
容器与 Serverless 之旅
作为虚拟化与容器组织（Developers, Events, Containers and Serverless: DECS）的一员，是我作为 builder 生涯中最有收获的篇章之一。出于对这项技术的热爱，我深入钻研，2020 年至 2022 年几乎把所有时间都投入到相关项目中。除了技术本身，我也被这个社区的开放文化所吸引，积极参与 The Linux Foundation 和云原生计算基金会（CNCF）的外部活动。可以回顾我的2022 年总结博客。我很幸运地以 Fargate 工程师的身份，从孵化阶段就加入了 AWS App Runner 的创始团队，这也让我晋升到了 L6。在这里从 0 到 1 打造一个公开产品，并参与底层的基础工程工作，是一段难忘的经历。
我非常感激我的领导和同事们：我的经理们，Mats、Anupam、Prashant（现任 Datadog 副总裁）、Joyita（后来我们又在 S3 的另一个很酷的数据库索引项目上合作过），以及 Jason（我在 AWS App Runner 的最后一位总监经理）；我的隔级经理 Inbal（现任 Twilio 首席产品官，曾任 GitHub 首席产品官）；还有 Deepak，当时我们的副总裁，现任 NGDE（Amazon Q 与 CodeWhisperer）副总裁，也是我目前团队的客户之一。Deepak 的“Friday Notes”邮件至今仍是令人深受启发的读物，我非常感谢他们的指导与支持。此后发生了许多变化：AWS App Runner 在我换团队的同一个月加入了 AWS Lambda；一些 ECS/Fargate 的同事在随后几年里转到了不同的组织，比如 Annapurna、EKS，也有一些人留了下来。
Serverless LLM
有人说 Bedrock 是“LLM 界的 Lambda”。我认为它远不止于此。LLM 推理是当下的热门话题，而 Serverless 架构在承担繁重工作方面持续扮演着关键角色，为客户实现高性能、高可用、高效率的 AI/ML 价值交付。这一原则早在 “Attention is All You Need” 时代之前就已成立。
AWS 副总裁 Swami 也指出：“Serverless 基础设施是 agentic AI 系统的支柱，无需管理服务器即可按需提供资源。”
